Fitness Friday: A New Plan
This summer I heard that several of my family members were losing alot of weight and the method to their weightloss was low carb.
My initial thought was Atkins. I have known people that do Atkins but they are definitely not eating healthy. They are heading through the drive-thru getting giant burgers and taking off the buns. They eat almost no carbs, drop weight super fast, then turn right around and gain it back.
I have been down the yo-yo road myself and another unsustainable diet is not my idea of fun.
So when Thanksgiving rolled around and I got to see how wonderful all my family members looked I wanted to know more. I found that a couple are going really low carb while the others aren’t going so low. They are just keeping track of everything and they are eating healthy.
That night I came home and started researching. I had been reading Hummingbird Homemaking for a while and knew she had links to other websites talking about Primal type eating.
After many hours of reading my husband and I decided to give lower carb a shot.
We started on 11/26/11 and the first two days for me was terrible. I felt nauseas, I was crabby, I was tired and I just wanted a Cherry Coke. However by day 3 I was feeling very well. We are just over a month in and we are feeling great.
So what are we eating?
Mostly whole foods
- Meats - Chicken, Fish, Tuna, Salmon, occasional beef/pork
- Dairy – milk, cheese, cottage cheese
- Fresh/Frozen and sometimes canned veggies - we are not eating potatoes very often
- Fresh/Frozen and sometimes canned fruit – the canned fruit has to be in it’s own juice with no added sugars
- natural peanut butter
- Eggs
- Nuts/Seeds
- Olive oil/coconut oil
The processed items we are buying
- lo carb bread
- lo carb whole wheat wraps
- Natural uncured, no nitrates, no anti-biotic, no hormones, vegetarian fed, sausage and bacon
Of course we are still buying things our daughters eat that do not fall into these categories.
How many carbs are we eating?
We are eating around 100. Some days we hit the 100 and other days we are under. We chose 100 after reading through alot of Mark’s articles.
How is this plan working for us?
It is actually working way better than I expected. I seriously didn’t think I could replace the bad carbs for real food but it has actually been easy. I am not hungry all day. I do not have sugar highs and lows. When meal time comes around I sit down to a healthy well rounded dish.
One day a week we do allow ourselves some leeway. Don’t get me wrong it is not an all day carb fest, however we do allow ourselves some extra carbs that day.
Each week I will post more information about how this diet plan is working and my weight loss.
This week I lost: 1lb
Since 11/26/11 I have lost a total of: 12lbs
