Saving Simply: Cooking at Home

It wasn’t that long ago that I chronicled the details of how I prepare for a shopping trip with my Simple Steps to Savings series.  I enjoyed doing the series very much but now I want to go a step farther.

Saving Simply will be a series of posts that focus on one small thing anyone can do to save money.  At this point in time I am not putting a limit of time or amount of posts on this series because I think there are so many small things that you can do to save a little money here and there and all these things add up.

The first thing I want to talk about is Cooking at Home!

This is something I have always struggled with, I mean for as long as I have been married. (17yrs)   Cooking is not something I particularly love to do.  I actually cook quite well but I am just not a fan of doing it.

If you ever read any of my menu plans you will see that most of my meals are super easy.  If I don’t plan easy meals then I am tempted to ask hubby to head to the drive-thru.

Since we made the switch to organic we have been focusing even more on eating at home.  I plan that one night a week we will have take out or even go out to a restaurant.  Having that plan gives us something to look forward to and over the last couple months it has been working out great.

Cooking and eating most of your meals at home not only saves money but it is better for you.

If you stay home and make your favorite pasta or mexican dish or even burgers and fries you will save money on the cost of the food and save on the gas to get to the restaurant and back.  The bonus is that you will know exactly what ingredients were used to prepare your families meal.

You can check out a list of my recipes here, I am adding to it all the time

How many nights a week do you eat at home?  Do you have a favorite recipe site?

We only eat out once a month or so, and it’s usually a $10 pizza from Pizza Hut. Otherwise it’s all homemade, from scratch meals over here-though I have a broke hand right now so I am relying more on pre-made ingredients to replace some of the ones I can’t make myself right now (try peeling potatoes for mashed potatoes with one hand-doesn’t work really well lol!).
My favorite recipe site is food.com, which is on your list too :)

Sara…once a month is great! My goal is to ween us down even more, I would love to only eat out or take out twice a month. However I think we are doing really great with all the changes and once a week is much better than take out whenever we feel like it. ;)

Sorry about your hand! I can’t imagine trying to do alot of homemade cooking with a broken hand.

  3. [...] time I talked about cutting down on take out and although this has been a problem for me over the years it does not compare to my beverage [...]
