Black Bean Burgers

Do you ever try a new recipe and just fall in love? That is what we did with this recipe. We had them for dinner last week then I made them for lunch one day and I am making them again this week.
I changed the original recipe a bit.
- 1 (16 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed and mashed with a fork
- 3 TBS Dehydrated Organic Onion
- a healthy shake or two of garlic powder
- 2 eggs
- 1 TBS chili powder
- 1 TBS cumin
- 1 tsp hot sauce
- 3/4 cup bread crumbs
By reading many of the comments on All Recipes I was able to determine that for one many people were finding the mixture to be too wet or not sticking together. For this reason I opted to use several dry ingredients. I added a second egg per another commenters suggestion and I opted to go with oats instead of bread crumbs, since oats is what I would use for a meatloaf.
I added all of the ingredients together in a large bowl and mixed it together with my hands as if I was making a meatloaf. Once I had everything well incorporated I divided the mixture 4 ways. Then formed each patty just like I would a regular hamburger patty. I cooked the patties in skillet on medium (you may need to go lower if your stove cooks really hot) with a little organic safflower oil in it. I cooked 4 minutes on one side then flipped and 4 on the next then flipped followed by 2 minutes and 2 minutes.
I served these nice sized burgers on toasted bread and topped it with a teeny bit of mayo that had been mixed with hot sauce. We also had orange wedges and baked homemade fries.
I will tell you that the spices on this first run were not enough for us. We still enjoyed them but thought they needed to be spicier. So when I made them the second time I used the above ingredients plus a sprinkle of salt, pepper, seasoned salt and a couple dashes of Worcestershire sauce…..they were delicious!
These would be great to play around with whatever seasonings you happen to really like!
