Simple Steps to Savings: Shop Your Home

When I get ready to head out to the grocery store the first thing I do is shop my home. I quickly check the fridge, freezer and pantry to see what I have a lot of and what I am lacking.
Do I have a lot of canned veggies, am I totally stocked up on meat? If I am pretty well stocked up on most of the items I use a lot then I can keep my budget low that week.
I will then only shop for what I need to have that week and what is on sale at rock bottom prices!
On the other hand if I have no idea what I have in my cabinets I can easily blow my budget by purchasing items I think I need when they are not on sale.
Some people keep a written inventory of what they have in their freezer, pantry, etc. I do not, however I am blessed to have a wonderful upright deep freeze and I can see everything when I open the door. If you have a chest deep freezer it may be worth a few minutes of your time to right up an inventory list and tape it to the lid. When you remove something you can mark it off and when you add something you can write it down.
Do you make it a point to “Shop Your Home” before you head to the grocery store? How do you keep track of what food items you have on hand?
