Giving from your Heart
Over the past 25 weeks as I have been posting my weekly giving I have been blessed to see others who have used their coupon skills to “purchase” items to donate to others in need. I have received emails and comments from wonderful ladies who make an effort to do what they can and it is such a blessing to know you are out there.
This week I received a comment from April that really touched me so I emailed her and asked if I could share her comment in post form and she obliged.
I have very little money, but I do try to give to others. Especially children. There are many children in my neighborhood who for one reason or another are starved for attention (parents work all the time is one reason) so I am kinda the hub for kids. I feed them and listen to their stories. Play games or read to them. Organize arts and crafts projects. The other thing I like to do, is with coupons when I can get a bunch of something cheap, like baking supplies or other snacks, I call all the kids down to my house and pass out cookies or chips. Today I sliced up a watermelon and passed it out to anyone that wanted some. You should have seen it, 12-15 kids in my front yard noshing on melon and talking about planting the seeds. Next year I am planning a big vegetable and flower garden and I intend to share both. In the past, I have told kids to let me know if they want a flower from my garden and I will give it to them or a bunch to take home to their mom. They loved it and it made me feel good to know I made them happy. ~April
How wonderful is that?? There are so many things that we can do that have no monetary value whatsoever but their actual value is very great! Showing love and kindness to these neighborhood kids is going to put such an impact on their lives. April and her “kids” are in my prayers!
What else could we do? Cook a meal for someone you know and surprise them, help someone with yard/house work, volunteer anywhere (homeless shelter, soup kitchen, school, church, etc.), visit the nursing home etc. Take a hard look at your family, neighborhood, community and see where you could be of help. I know that giving of my time is harder even though it doesn’t cost me any money, but trust me when I say, it can make a serious impact.

I mail out coupons to my family and friends. Most of them live on set budgets and they don’t have a lot of money to spend. Money for my husband and I isn’t too tight, so we pay for the stamps and postage to mail the coupons to them. (Sometimes sending a bunch of coupons to my baby sister can cost a buck and a half, as I send her whatever I am not going to mail to anyone else and her and her friends get together and divide them up.) We also buy the coupons and get the ones from our neighbors that they aren’t going to use. I spend the time cutting them out and cutting off the access paper because every little bit costs more to mail.
They thank me all the time and tell me that if it wasn’t for me sending them coupons, that they might not have been able to make it through the week or month financially.
So true! We often think of giving as writing a check but there are so many ways we can give our time and our resources without spending anything. Thanks for sharing! What a nice way to start my day!
