Tackle it Tuesday: Living Room Redo Almost Done

  • Sharebar

I am definitely what you would call an indecisive person  I hate to choose a restaurant, I rarely do good at picking out the movie and when it comes to my house I can’t seem to decide anything.

Almost 4 yrs ago we bought an older house in a small town and were thrilled.  We got a great deal and the house is in good sound shape with new windows and electrical wiring.  We also have a basement and a garage, the things my hubby was looking for.  However the thing it didn’t have was any decorative style.  Every room was “old lady” heaven with lots and lots of wallpaper.

Believe it or not I actually lived with the living room for three years.  Hard to believe when you see the pictures below.  For one I had no clue what I was going to do in this room.  But in my defense I had just had major surgery when we first moved in and I had a very difficult time recovering.   Then after we lived here for about 8 months injured my neck at work and went through a lot of physical therapy.  I was on a 10lb weight restriction for an entire year!!  So serious house decor was out.

Below you can see our living room before.  3 out of 4 walls looked like this.

This however was the gorgeous “accent” wall!!

We had already completed the bedrooms and done a lot of work on the bathroom so last summer we got to work on the living room.  We opted to seal the wallpaper and paint it for now because the walls underneath is made of some old time stuff and it really needs new sheet rock.  We sealed it with 2 coats of oil based primer and the 3 coats of this vibrant green sand washed paint.  The room is 23 1/2 X 13 X 9 and this took hours upon hours.

Then hubby and I took up the carpet and refinished the hardwood floors.

Because I am such and indecisive person I couldn’t decide on a couch, so we covered the one we already had and hopefully some day I will make a decision.  I also couldn’t decide on curtains or a rug.   The living room has been this way for 6 months now.

I finally decided to refurb an old coffee table a month ago since I couldn’t find one that I wanted to spend money on.

(the coloring in the above  pic is more accurate)

Then last week I came across a rug that I really loved, Yay!  So I told hubby and we snatched it up.  In the same trip I decided on the curtains and hoped that when I got home I would like how it looked.

Thankfully I do!  It feels so much cozier in here.  There are still many things I want done in this room.  Like a tall black book case, a large mirror for a huge empty wall,  pillows for the couch and a lot of little accessories, however it is at least improving.

I am really really hoping I can get the living room at least mostly finished by the time warm weather arrives.  I still need to tackle the kitchen and I am repainting the bathroom this summer because I have now decided that I can’t stand the color I painted it last summer!!  Uggh.

So much better without that awful wallpaper! The color looks very similar to the color in my kitchen.

I think it looks great. We also need to paint like every room in our house and redecorate, my husband and I both HATE painting. Sooo… I don’t know when we will actually get around to it.

My hubby really likes your rug!!! I like it also, i’m looking for a nice zebra print one. So if you see one let me know :o ).

You can get a tall black bookcase at Walmart for $25. That’s what we bought for our living room and we like it a lot. Were about to buy another one for my hubby’s office.

    Thanks Carmen! :)

    Mandy,
Painting can be such a chore especially if every room of your house is covered in wallpaper. Oh my you ought to see me kitchen! I can’ t wait for it to be changed this summer but I dread the work.

$25 sounds right up my alley, I will have to check out Wally World. :)

Very nice improvement. I am not found of wallpaper myself and when you think about it, it is more of a fire hazard. Anyway it looks updated and stylish.

I definitely like the tall one!! We have a very long living room, 23 1/2 feet and the ceilings are 9ft, the little one might just be too little. However it would be great for a bedroom or office!!

  6. Great improvement. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Lia

Thanks Amber, Lia, Carolyn, Lori and Maryann. Even though the color is vibrant the green is a very serene color. It is my hubby’s favorite room!! :)

  11. It’s really coming along, it’s much more soothing. The paint color does look a little bright :) .

I’m so glad you came over and linked this up to Make it Yours day!

I just love your new room!

  14. IT looks like it is all coming together. A beach theme would go perfect with your black, kahki and green . Get some weather wood and make a sign and some old shutters.

I am letting everyone know–if you haven’t signed up at the new blog, you need to RE-Sign up. Google doesn’t let you take your followers with you. If you have already done so –sorry for mentioning it. I am going back and forth between the old and new blog plus my old and new e-mail and I can’t keep it all straight. I am hoping to have the old blog finished up (moving everything) and closed down this week.
