WFMW: From Plaid Skort To Trendy Bag
Emeri, my 14yr old, had been wanting a plaid bag to carry gym clothes and such to school, things she doesn’t want to put into her back pack. She often carries one of my reusable bags but she wants a trendy reusable bag of her own.
Last month she shopped around for one with her birthday money, however she didn’t find one that was a decent price.
So I decided I would make her one.

I started with this plaid skort that had belonged to my mother in law. When she passed away 2 years ago my daughters were given tons of her clothing. She was a tiny woman, only 4′ 11″. This skort was in one of the bags. It is a skirt that is connected to a pair of shorts underneath. I got it out and thought it would make a quick and easy reuasable bag.

I started by turning it inside out and seperating the crotch of the shorts. I then cut and sewed them up to make them look like a second skirt. I then pinned the inside skirt to the outside skirt and sewed them together all the way around.
After they were sewed together I cut off the excess. At this point it already looked like a reusable bag it was only lacking a shoulder strap. I took the matching belt and sewed it one end to either side of the bag.
I did not add anything to shut it closed, if Emeri decides she wants something like that I will add it later.

Personally I think it turned out to be an awfully cute and trendy bag and Emeri is going to be excited when she gets home to see it this afternoon. This only took me about 15-20 minutes to do.
After she gets home I will have to take a picture of her wearing it.
Taking a plaid skort and turning it into a Trendy Bag totally works for me!

What a clever idea. She should really like it.
What a cute idea! I am a “Bag Lady” (I love tote bags..not just to be “green” but because I just love them. I might have to try this!
How cute is that?!
Betty: She loves it!
Jana: This was so easy. We have several more of these types of skirts/skorts and I am thinking of revamping them all. My girls are both at the age now that I can barely get them to wear a skirt for Christmas.
Sherry: Thanks!
I wish I could sew! Great Job!
This is an awesome Make-Do! So frugal. I will have to keep this is mind for my daughter and her gym clothes. Just think- wash the gym clothes and if the bag smells from carrying them home just wash the bag too.
So smart and definitely darling to boot!
Thanks for linking. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, but it is finals week and I have been very busy. Three more comprehensive finals to go and then the new term starts on Feb 3rd! Have a wonderful week and again thanks for the wonderful idea and photos.
